Sometimes making something look simple is a very complex process. I think that is what I love about playing around with perspective and urban settings. You need an understanding of the rules and an acceptance that it is unlikely you will bring more clarity if you add all the details to an image.
The palette on this piece was very satisfying to work with - the limitations and structure it provided balanced nicely with the warmth and visual interest. The title is another little satisfying piece - technically this is 1st Street, but it's known as Historic Main Street or Main Street for short. Part of the charm! You can buy it here: http://www.michellewiebe.com/store/p32/Historic-Main-Street.html I have been going through my existing work the past while, preparing for some fun upcoming events that I can't wait to tell you more about!
I have been plugging away on a new reduction linocut, but while I'm waiting for some layers to dry, I figured I would pop this little beauty into my online store. It was a challenge to print such a large field of black! You can buy it here: http://www.michellewiebe.com/store/p31/Bird-in-Flight.html Recently I got really stuck on a reduction linocut (it's still in progress, it's complex and thankfully, I am unstuck) and one thing that was really helpful to me was to look back into my archive at other complexities from other times.
This little hummingbird was one of those pieces from a few years ago. At the time, I was struggling with composition, patterns and circles. True to my nature, I decided the only way forward was to confront complexity. I really like how past Michelle pushed through the difficult parts and ended up with what I consider a very charming print. You can buy it here: http://www.michellewiebe.com/store/p30/Hummingbird.html I'm waiting for the return of hot summer days where the only sound you hear when you are out in nature is the buzzing of insects and far off bird calls. I wanted to capture that feeling of heat with jewel-like tones to show the light of the sun hanging high in the afternoon sky.
It was a good challenge to switch to landscapes, I needed 9 layers to achieve the colours I was going for from my original sketches. You can buy it here: http://www.michellewiebe.com/store/p29/Woodland-Road.htm |
